How to Set Continuous Shooting on Nikon D750

Quick way to change minimum shutter speed on D750

I am lucky enough to own legendary D750, and till now i was using manual mode 95% times.

Recently i heard that Aperture prio mode is most popular in photographrs community and thought of giving it try for few days, and I am actually finding it convenient than M mode, except one thing "changing min shutter speed"!

As far as I know we can set min shutter speed in ISO settings menu. I own Tamrom 150-600 and in M mode i used to allow min shutter speed manually depending on zoom length (e.g. 1/150 for 150mm zoom and > 1/600 for 600mm zoom)

every time i change zoom on lens, i don't want to go in camera menu to change min shutter speed. In short my requirement is:: change min shutter speed while keeping eye on viewfinder, should not need to go in menu for that

does anyone know how i can achieve this on D750?

Hi

Doesn't D750 have an Auto mode in min shutter speed in Auto ISO, when it will do it based on FL. My D810 does

yes, just now i read about this auto mode, and it solves problem upto some extent.

What i am looking for is more of quick manual control, e.g. if i sense that bird is gonna fly off, should be possible to bump up min shutter speed to 1/2000 quickly, e.g.

The minimum shutter speed is more of a general guideline which covers your preferences over the totality of your photography.  It should not change picture to picture, but cover what shutter speed you are willing to live with in general.  That said, you should think about using shutter priority when your are concerned about shutter speed on a picture to picture basis.  If you still want to keep control of your aperture or desire greater control, try manual mode and set the ISO to auto.

Try manual mode with auto ISO. Basically, this allows the camera to float the ISO for exposure and YOU dial in the aperture and shutter speed you need for a given situation. I did a video on this a few months back that goes into detail and setup.

Changing the shutter speed while you shoot in manual is actually pretty fast. Try that. You can still shoot auto ISO in manual.

What I would do in this case is go to S mode and preset the shutter speed to 1/2000. Then return to A mode and shoot normally. If you sense a fly-off, quickly turn mode dial to S and it will still be on 1/2000. Auto-ISO should take care of the rest, although the aperture might be set wide open. Maybe going quickly to M mode with shutter preset would work best.

It's handy to keep in mind that wherever you last set SS, in either M or S mode, will be where it stays when you switch back and forth between the two, even of you use A mode in between.

Apart from the best available options suggested by other users, i think for you to make such a fast change you may need a camera that can read your mind

Jokes apart, another option could be to set fast min shutter speed in auto iso but shoot in non-auto iso mode for normal scenes. When you suddenly need fast shutter, press iso button and front dial to quickly move into auto iso (which will make use of preset fast shutter speed). I'm not sure if we can program a body button to turn on/off auto ISO in single click (need to explore more on that).

Have you try shooting in Manual with auto ISO on. When combine with EV compensation, it works great for me when i want to have full control of aperture and SS.
You can also set the exposure step to 0.5 stop or 1 stop increment rather than 1/3 of a stop increment for faster dial.

Welcome to one of those "camera manufacturers seem to never really use the cameras they make" moments. Your issue stems from a whole array of problems, but most of them really come from an understanding of exposure modes / controls that comes straight from the film era and has yet to acknowledge what a digital camera means for exposure modes and controls (same problem for metering for example, especially for ISO-invariant cameras). There's been progress but it's been insufferably slow (it took Canon what, at least half a decade to catch up with Nikon's auto ISO implementation ?) and a big controls paradigm change is needed in my opinion.

/rant mode off

I think the fastest way to change the minimum shutter speed in auto ISO is to use the U1/U2 custom modes just for that. Unfortunately that limits you to two minimum shutter speeds and, as far as I'm concerned, I don't think any control on the top left of a camera is particularly well-suited to changes when looking through the viewfinder. Also, if you already used the user modes for another purpose... Still, that's what I use to quickly change the minimum shutter speed on my cameras.

As other posters proposed, you can also use M-mode with auto ISO and exposure compensation, but it only is a very partial solution as it won't let the shutter speed float upwards when you reach base ISO, at which point you'll be nearly always changing the shutter speed from shot to shot or revert back to A mode... with the previous problem of not being able to quickly set a minimum shutter speed. Shutter priority has the same problem : basically, these two approaches don't acknowledge the fact that sometimes, you aren't looking for a specific shutter speed, but a minimum one - and don't want to have to constantly change the shutter speed when a minimum shutter speed would be sufficient, free you from unnecessary setting changes, and only necessitate an occasional (but quick ! If, for example, something suddenly comes up but your current minimum shutter speed is too low or too high, or if you're shooting in variable light) change.

Thanks friend for valuable inputs!! Your inputs will surely help to develop my own shooting methodology.

It's pity to see how camera manufacturers want us to adopt out style depending on device limitations. How hard it is to develop firmware which will give all possible shooting choices to users. Maybe their focus is still on hardware capabilities to be leader in market.

U1/U2 mode seems to be good choice, thought it will not allow me to choose specific min shutter speed, but i can program them for slower and faster auto min shutter speed modes to suit my needs. So not at least i have 2 quick setting options available. Can I use "A" as third mode? i mean U1 = slow auto, U2 = fast auto & A = normal auto min shutter speed. Hope switching from U1/U2 to A will bring me back to original setting. Suggestions?

Re: Quick way to change minimum shutter speed on D750

U1 / U2 mode is working really great!! I thought that i would never use this U1/U2 setting in my life since camera is not shared.

Now i have 3 modes ready for use-

  • U1- A prio, auto shutter speed (faster-1)
  • U2- A prio, auto shutter speed (fastest-2)
  • A prio mode (with auto shutter speed normal)

Also my new monopod has added great stability to heavy tamron 150-600, resulting in less waste photos & better focus accuracy.

Thanks a lot for sharing views!!

I use that mode frequently. It works very well, at last for me.

I don't exactly follow why you need to use 3 different modes, with less control, than what several other posters suggested by using auto-ISO combined with manual.  In either case congrats on getting better results.

I do prefer manual mode with auto-iso when using fixed focal length lenses or while using tripod (where i use fixed iso and can allow shutter speed to go slow to any level), also i use this option for BIF photography

But when using telephotos like Tamrom 150-600, i don't want to keep on changing shutter speed to 1/focal length. That's why I was searching for better options here.

Anyway it's been just 1 week i have started using this new 3 option mode, i will test it for some time to see if it's really useful. I don't think it's full time replacement to manual mode, but seems to be convinient in specific situations.

I'm am not sure I understand your problem. Change min shutter speed permanently or being able to control the shutter speed while in aperture priority with Auto ISO enabled?

I got Auto ISO set to "Top of My Menu" assigned to the Fn-button. It makes it easy to change the min shutter speed or anything else regarding Auto ISO but I still have to take my eye from the VF. But I usually don't have to change the min shutter speed that often since it's possible to control the shutter speed with the help of Easy ISO (custom setting d8 on the D750).

Easy ISO let you control the ISO setting with the sub-command dial in aperture mode. Enable Auto ISO and dial in whatever aperture you want, read what ISO and shutter speed you get and override ISO with Easy ISO until you get whatever shutter speed you prefer. Dial back as soon as conditions change.

Would that be a solution to your problem?

On my d7200 min shutter speed isn't used in u1 or u2 shooting modes.

What I did is put the Auto ISO menu in my custom menu. Then I assigned the function button on the camera front to the custom menu.

It then always shows the last item used. I used it primarily to quickly change the minimum shutter speed or the AE/AF button assignment.
I find this very workable.
