How to Edit Audio of Video in Windows Movie Maker

considerate_guy

Yes... but first you must split the clip into separate parts so you can change the volume on just one part.  On the Video Tools | Edit tab, there is a Split button.  Or you can use M on the keyboard.  Make a split at the beginning and end of the portion you want to mute the sound on.  Then double-click this section which will bring you to the Video Tools | Edit tab (if it isn't up already).  Change the volume using the Video Volume slider.  If you want it completely silent, slide it all the way to the left.

There is a way to separate out the audio that is attached to videos because if you add music or narration later it puts the file below the video so you could delete the file or move it around.  I am absolutely in awe that even Microsoft employees will continue to tell customers that they can remove music with the volume control. NO YOU CANNOT!    That is not removing anything it simply mutes the sound.  They could shorten their answer to "Unplug your speakers!"  It is exactly the same thing...can't hear sound and nothing removed.  Than, and gotta love this one, they say the sound has been removed as a result of having saved it and reopening it. All one has done is save the movie as is ; meaning you saved the settings of the movie which includes having turned down the volume.  BUT, the problem has not been addressed at all.

We want to know How to REMOVE THE AUDIO FILE, not just turn down the volume . I counted I believe 12 You Tube videos of people that make videos telling people how to turn the volume down.

Please does anyone really know how to remove the audio file s?   that are already embedded on videos downloaded from the internet., please no more pretend advice. Sorry for not being grateful but seriously bad advice wastes peoples time and really, telling people how to turn volume? Not directed at any one person I am just wasting going on 2 hours bouncing between all the amateur advice. Surely there must be one of you tech heads that know this.

The fix lies in being being able to separate the audio waves bar from the video so it looks the same as if we were to add music and narration ourselves to the video, then it appears as a bar below the video so one can move it around or delete it.  There is a far more complicated fix with 2 separate 3rd party software, though hoping there is an easier one.

Can any one help us?

Hello Roman,

Welcome to Microsoft Community Forum. I understand that you want a specific information about removing the audio from the video. We would like to inform you that this feature is not available in Movie Maker. The workaround is the best solution to use Movie Maker on removing/muting the audio so that you'll be able to include a different sound within the video file.

We would suggest that you go to this link and provide your feedback on the program. Microsoft will review information within the page for future reference.

In case you have other inquiries regarding Movie Maker, please let us know. We'll be here to support you.

Thank you.

@RomanTerry,

Firstly, I'm not a Microsoft employee.  I'm not affiliated with Microsoft other than I use their products and volunteer my time answering questions here on the forums.  They've given me an MVP "badge" as a thank you for helping out, but it doesn't mean I'm part of Microsoft in anyway.

I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to accomplish, but let me review how Movie Maker works to edit files.  You basically add your video files (with possible associated audio), and you can add secondary audio files (music, narration, sound).  Once you have made your desired edits and everything previews as expected, you create a new movie file containing the specified video and whatever mixture of audio you have given it.

So, in order for the audio in a video file to not be heard in the final output, it must be muted.  This is done by lowering the volume.  You are correct; this does not remove the final audio stream in your output movie.  Your movie is always* an video/audio file containing both video and audio.  But, whatever audio was there and has been muted will not be in the final movie.  There is no way for someone to restore the volume and hear that audio track.  It is essentially removed from the final movie.

*Technically it is possible to create a video that has no audio track at all.  I suppose you are wanting to do this to save a little space in encoding audio that will be silent?  If that is what you are aiming to do, then you should create a custom output.  After going to the File menu and choosing Save movie, scroll to the bottom of the list and choose Create custom setting.  Under Audio settings you can choose the various bitrates, or No audio.  Give that output a name (something like "Video only (no audio)" and use that profile whenever you want to save without the audio track.

The reason I answered the question the way I did is that the original poster wanted to know how to remove a portion of audio.  In editing in Movie Maker, you can't actually remove a portion of audio that is in the original video file; you can only mute it by setting the volume to zero.  My original instructions still stand for this scenario.

Excellent answer, but, I think you're missing a trick here. Once you've created your audio free video, you can put it back into movie maker, edit it and you've got what you wanted in the first place; a portion of video with no sound

I like Bill's response - but can you further explain how you would "put it back" into Movie Maker ??

I have a portion of a video which I would like to take out and input another tune.  There is a church service with a hymn which contains some awful singing.  I want the recorded singing out - and a substitute tune put in.

I understand I can split the film - lower the volume on the affection portion - and save the file.

But if I input the new song/tune over the lowered section --- surely this will also affect the new tune - surely that too will be low volume ??

Help please

Hello rhami01,

Thank you for your reply. You may wait for Bill's response on the question you had. For your other issue about adding a new song over the lowered section, we can't guarantee that the volume will be changed. It is still depend on the volume of the original file. However, you can still edit or adjust the volume of the added song in Movie Maker.

If you have clarifications, please let us know.

Regards,

Helene C.

Back when I was using windows movie maker back in 2005, there was the ability to edit the sound around from the original audio.

Why was that option removed?

It's such a hassle to make videos now...

why go backwards when Windows should be moving forward?
